Spring: Awakening and freshness

April and May are the months for those seeking solitude and tender greenery. At this time, the Douro looks strikingly fresh, and Porto shakes off its winter haze. It is the perfect time for strolls through the Serralves gardens and long lunches on terraces, when the sun is already warm but not yet scorching. In spring, the nature of the North seems particularly delicate and renewed. September and October: Harvest Time (Vendimia)

This is perhaps the liveliest time of year in the Douro Valley. The hills are bathed in shades of gold and ochre, and the air is thick with the scent of crushed grapes. If you want to see the heart of Portuguese winemaking, feel the rhythm of work in the vineyards and, perhaps, share a glass of wine with those who have just finished the harvest - choose early autumn. This is a time of warmth, generosity and deep, rich flavours.

Winter: Melancholy and Cosiness

For the true hedonist, winter in Porto has its own charm. It is a time of ‘saudade’ - a gentle, wistful sadness. When the ocean at Fosé becomes truly powerful and the mist gently descends upon the river, the streets smell of roasted chestnuts, and the city invites you inside: to the fireplaces in historic mansions, to vintage port wines and long conversations in restaurants. Winter is the best season to experience the region’s authentic, non-touristy character. The weather? This is the Atlantic; no one can tell you whether the coming winter will be rainy and misty, or dry and sunny. You might take a chance and witness a unique phenomenon – a city that, instead of snow, is blanketed in flowers in winter. Camellias begin to bloom from late December, magnolias blossom in mid-January, and in February the Douro Valley is covered in a white and pink haze of almond blossoms.
