Guides are updated twice a year. Before each update, every recommendation is re-checked - opening hours, contact details, whether the chef is still in the kitchen. Places that have changed significantly are removed or replaced. That said, Northern Portugal is a living region. A family estate may close for harvest. A restaurant may shift its hours for August. For anything time-sensitive, I always recommend confirming directly with the venue a week before you go.

For travel between May and September - the high season in Northern Portugal, when the Douro is at its most visited and the best wine experiences book up fast - I recommend starting six to nine months out. Some of the most interesting cellar visits and private tastings are available only by appointment, and the people running them have small teams. Between October and April, three to four months is usually sufficient. The region is quieter, but harvest season in September and October is a world of its own — if you want to be here during the vindima, earlier is better.
