Questions Worth Asking
Those platforms surface what is popular. I surface what is good — and the two rarely overlap as much as they should.
Every place in these guides is there because I have eaten the meal, walked the quinta, sat with the winemaker. Not because it ranked well or paid for placement. The Douro valley has hundreds of wine estates. I will tell you which five are worth your afternoon, and exactly when to arrive at each one.
The difference is not just curation. It is accountability. My name is on every recommendation.
Each guide is a complete, ready-to-travel document. Not a mood board. Not a list of links. A working plan, built around how a day actually unfolds in Northern Portugal.
Inside every guide:
– The Master Itinerary - a PDF with an hour-by-hour flow, driving distances, and parking notes for every stop
– Cultural Context - the history and significance behind each place, because understanding why somewhere matters changes how you experience it
– The Gastronomic Programme - private tastings, market visits, cellar doors, and tables worth booking ahead
– Full Logistics - verified opening hours, direct links, and booking steps for every venue
– The Hedonist's Shortlist - my personal picks for where to sleep, eat, and find the best picnic spot in a five-kilometre radius
– A Personalised Google Map - built around your exact route, ready to open on your phone the moment you land

• Curated Immersion: A program of rare experiences - from private tastings and horseback riding to boat charters and authentic encounters with local residents.

• Interactive Navigation: A personalized Google Maps layer designed to guide you effortlessly from one hidden gem to the next.
Guides are updated twice a year. Before each update, every recommendation is re-checked - opening hours, contact details, whether the chef is still in the kitchen. Places that have changed significantly are removed or replaced.
That said, Northern Portugal is a living region. A family estate may close for harvest. A restaurant may shift its hours for August. For anything time-sensitive, I always recommend confirming directly with the venue a week before you go.
Every guide includes alternative options for exactly this reason -places of equivalent character that work as a natural second choice, not a consolation.
If you have opted for the Personal Travel Design, I manage backup bookings as part of the process. You will not arrive somewhere to find the door locked.
Yes - that is the Personal Travel Design service. The ready-made guides cover curated routes with fixed itineraries. The design service builds something from scratch: your dates, your group, your pace, your palate.
It is a different product. Slower, more specific, and entirely yours. Details and pricing are on the Personal Travel Design page.
For travel between May and September - the high season in Northern Portugal, when the Douro is at its most visited and the best wine experiences book up fast - I recommend starting six to nine months out. Some of the most interesting cellar visits and private tastings are available only by appointment, and the people running them have small teams.
Between October and April, three to four months is usually sufficient. The region is quieter, but harvest season in September and October is a world of its own — if you want to be here during the vindima, earlier is better.
It depends on which service you have chosen.
With the Personalised Travel Plan,(/personal-travel-design) you receive direct contacts and step-by-step booking instructions for every venue. The logistics are clear - you make the calls or send the emails yourself.
With the Travel Concierge Service, (/personal-travel-design)I handle all of it: restaurant reservations, winery appointments, driver coordination. You arrive with nothing left to organise.
In both cases, accommodation and flights are booked directly by you. This protects your loyalty points and gives you full control over your own spending. I provide precise recommendations on where to stay and why - the booking is yours.
Small adjustments are straightforward and handled without fuss. If dates shift significantly - or if the destination or shape of the trip changes entirely - that may require a meaningful redesign of the itinerary. In those cases, I will discuss what that looks like and whether any adjustment to the service fee applies.
